Originating in China, a long time ago, there is a game known by different names all over the World like Mahjong, Mah Jong, MahJongg, Pung Chow and there are many more names. This interesting and complex game has 108 suited tiles and when you buy a set, you will mostly get 136 to 144 tiles.

The suited tiles have a suit and a rank. Dots, Bamboo, and Characters are the names of the Suits and each tile is given a rank between 1 and 9. While referring to a particularly suited tile, rank is referred first followed by the suit. The first (#1) and last (#9) tiles are collectively known as terminal tiles. The players have to form a set of matching tiles also called as melds. Circle on #1 Dot tile is a large circle and on other dotted tiles, you will see small circles. The bamboo suit is represented by a bird and each tile has got those many numbers of bamboo sticks related to their rank.  The tiles are made from a different material like paper, bamboo, ivory or the famous catalin mahjong tiles.

Each tile has different color symbols used on it and there is a significance to each color and symbol. The way each tile is made is unique and difficult to make a similar tile. Some tilesets will have blank tiles, which can be used if one or more tiles are missing or broken. Some sets have an exact number of tiles. Getting mahjong replacement tiles for the exact missing tile is a bit of a searching, but internet makes it easy

Another type of tiles is Honor tiles, which don’t have any rank or suits. They are divided into two types named as Wind and Arrows. East, South, West and North are the wind tiles and each wind tile is a set of 4, making 16 wind tiles in the set. Center, Fortune, and Blank are the Arrow tiles and again each tile is a set of 4, making 12 Arrow tiles. So, overall; the tile set has 28 honor tiles. The mahjong tiles museum displays all different tiles.

But that’s not all! There are 4 Bonus Seasons tiles and 4 Bonus Flowers tiles. The flowers tiles are set aside and the player gets to draw again. There are some joker tiles also which can replace any suit or honor tile to put together a hand. IF you have extra tiles but a joker is missing, you can buy mahjong joker stickers

The game has much more rules and the rules vary in different countries also with some local variations. The Mahjong tiles are added to Unicode standard in 2008 and you can play multiple online games based on this real tiles game.
